RE: Charleston, South Carolina

If you are up to walking, take a walking tour of historic Charleston. You can go places you can't go otherwise. We chose Charleston Strolls and we were very pleased. It is a two hour tour and I don't think we sat down at all during that time. We were just there a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

RE: Biltmore House, Ashville, NC Question

One more thing. Guided tours are an additional cost to the ticket. Depending on the tour you take depends on the cost.

RE: Biltmore House, Ashville, NC Question

We were just there about two and a half weeks ago. The campground where we stayed, Asheville Bear Creek RV Campground had tickets that were for two consecutive days at the price for at the door. Perhaps other places have that offer as well. I don't know if it is valid during the summer whenr there are probably more people or not. If you have the time to spend two days, you might ask. We did the grounds on one day and the house on another day. You will be exhausted if you see everything on the same day. Tickets include wine tasting if you are interested. They did not take our tickets for the tasting on the first day and we went back through on the second day to taste some different wines. We did rent the audio tape tour and I found it beneficial. The tape gives much more information than the book. I didn't even listen to extra stories that were available. Enjoy it. It is an unbelievable home.

RE: Pigeon Forge & Memphis

This reply may be too late as you may already be on your way. We just came from Memphis about a week ago and are currently in Pigeon Forge. In Memphis, I would recommend the Sun Studio tour where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, etc. got their start. We also enjoyed the National Civil Rights Museum.

RE: A Better Choice in Branson's Campgrounds

We are currently at ABC. Interestingly, Ozark was our other choice and we went back and forth for quite a while. I think we finally decided to stay at ABC because the shows we were going to were on that side. We have found the people friendly when we have seen them. Several ladies were in the laundry room when there was a downpour so we stayed and chatted for awhile. Others in the office and as I have walked by have all seemed friendly. Fortunately the park is not full and we only have a neighbor next to us on one side. The sites are close, but we have not been sitting outside because of the weather. WiFi works very well. I do agree I think it is a place many come to park while they visit the Branson area and are not looking for the campground experience so much. It's a little dark to drive back here when it is raining though! We will probably not be back to Branson for some time in an RV. If we were able to take another long trip we would hit other parts of the country. If we did come back, we probably would stay somewhere else, not because this is unpleasant, but because we would try somewhere else.

RE: Oklahoma City to Branson MO

I will be going the opposite direction in May. About how long does the trip take driving 60MPH? I forgot to look at the clock when we left, but I think it was around 9:30. We got to Branson about 3:30. We were averaging about 61-62 mph. There were a couple of places with one lane traffic because of construction but it didn't slow us down too much or too long. The road was decent. We stopped for fuel and lunch at one of the travel plazas and at the MO Welcome Center. Have a good trip.

RE: Mt. Rushmore

Close to Deadwood is a place called Tatanka. It was built by Kevin Costner after he filmed "Dancing with Wolves". It has some fantastic bronze sculptures of a buffalo hunt by the Native Americans. There is a great display of how all parts of a buffalo were used and for what. Also in Deadwood is a gold mine. We did not take the tour so I don't know if it is a tourist trap or not. Near Spearfish is the Black Hills Passion Play. If you go, take jackets and blankets. It can get cold.

RE: Oklahoma City to Branson MO

Thanks for your help. It is as I thought, but I wanted to double check with someone who was more familiar with the area. I already have enought info from Branson to make it difficult to make decisions about what to see. However, we'll stop at the Tourism Center. We always do when we enter a new state. Sometimes we find out about some real gems we would not have known about otherwise. I'm wondering how muddy the campgrounds will be. Most of them seem to have gravel sites. We will just have to put boards under the jacks so they don't sink and hope it works. thanks again.

Oklahoma City to Branson MO

We are going to be traveling from Oklahoma City to Branson MO this coming MOnday. Is the best route the turnpike out of OK? I assume it is o.k. for motorhomes to be on the turnpikes? Are there attendants to give change if necessary? Are there areas where we can exit if we need to for fuel or to stop? Sorry to seem so ignorant, but we have not been to Oklahoma for a very long time and when we were I think we traveled I-40. Thanks for your help.

RE: Right Coast to the Left Coast? Anyone?

We must be nuts too. We just started a 3 1/2 mo. trip a week ago, going the opposite direction. Visiting areas in CA, AZ, NM, TX, OK, MO, TN, GA, SC, NC, VA, PA, KY, IN,IL, KN, CO, and home Even with that much time, I know we will miss alot and probably feel rushed. We tried to do a similar trip twice before and family obligations prevented it. This time, we decided to do it anyway despite the high fuel costs. If we don't do it now, we may never get to. I don't know how much longer we will be driving an RV on such long trips. Enjoy your trip. We are enjoying ours so far.

RE: Need Suggestions on St Louis

We are going to visit friends in St. Louis at the end of the month. We are staying at Sundemeir. It is expensive though. $55/night I think. There is major road construction on one of the Interstates in the area. At the moment I can't remember which one, but that influenced where we stayed. Check the MO DOT. I have also heard good things about Babler.

RE: Road restrictions for RV's

I would imagine that the Rand McNally Motorcarriers Atlas is about the only place that has this type of information. Normally, the 'NO Trucks" signs refer to 18 wheelers and not MH/RVs. The site below shows what information is available on a state by state basis. Also is a site for low clearance. site Low clearance Thanks for the RV safely site. It has some good info on it. I'll bookmark that one, especially. We have a Camping World close by. I may stop there and look at their books/atlas's. countrygal

Road restrictions for RV's

Can anyone tell me where I might find information about road restrictions in different states for a Class A? I have information about the length, width, etc. restrictions for each state from FMCA. I know somewhere I have seen listings of certain roads you are not allowed to drive on. In some states you can only go so far off the interstate or you can only go to the campground. In some states you cannot go on the road at all. I had a friend tell me he had to back off an onramp on some road in NY because he was not allowed there and did not see any signage. I would like to avoid that. I have looked at a couple of DOT websites, but I can't find any information about restrictions - at least easily. Thanks, countrygal

RE: Gatlinburg to Asheville

Thanks all for your replies. It sounds doable. We'll heed the advise to take it easy, staying in the right lane. I can enjoy the scenery while DH keeps his eyes on the road. We aren't in a rush to get there that day. As far as rough roads go, CA has some terrible ones. The last time we came home on I-80 through Lake Tahoe area it was so bad, DH wrote a letter to the Governator!

Gatlinburg to Asheville

Having never been in this area before, I am wondering if you can drive a motorhome from Gatlinburg to Asheville. If so, is it a white knuckle, harrowing drive through the mountains? Would you recommend it or no? Thanks.

RE: Ft McAllister or Skidway State Park?

Thank you for your opinions. It sounds like Skidaway will fit our needs best. It sounds like Ft. McAllister could be a day trip. We are getting excited. We picked a bad year to make a cross country trip, but who knows what next year will bring.

Ft McAllister or Skidway State Park?

We are going to be in Savannah in May. Having never been to GA, we have been relying on forums to pick where we want to stay. I have seen both of these state parks recommended several times. Do you prefer one over the other? Right now both have space available according to the online reservations system. Do I need to make reservations soon or is there usually space if I wait a few weeks? I like to have some flexibility in the schedule, but I also get nervous when I don't know where I'm staying. Thanks for your input.

RE: Calif Campground Recommendations?

Especially if you like to fish, you might enjoy Collins Lake, about 1 1/4 hours from Sac between Marysville and Grass Valley. http://www.collinslake.com/ There are some pull thru sites which you might like. We like the sites a little further away from the entrance and the store because it doesn't feel as crowded. It feels like a state park with lots of trees and grass. It is not a resort. They have the best ice cream. Get a kids portion. They are very friendly when you call. We have not gone in the summer on a weekend. I'm sure it is very busy then, but if you have some flexibility going during the week or before May 1st would be better. You could easily drive up and check it out before you go. They do not have sewer but there is a dump on the way out.

RE: Mt. Rushmore Trip

A place that we enjoyed that has not been mentioned is Tatanka. It is close to Deadwood. It was developed by Kevin Costner after he made "Dances with Wolves". It is small and is devoted to the buffalo. There are displays of all the ways the Indians used the buffalo, a movie about building Tatanka but the best part is the amazing bronze statues of a buffalo chase where the animals were chased over the edge of a cliff by the Indians. The statues are amazing. I second going to Custer State Park in the late afternoon. We went one time and saw an unbelievable number of buffalo roaming all over, including the road. We went another time and there was not one in sight. It was too hot. I can't remember if someone has mentioned the Eye of the Needle or not, but that is an interesting thing to see.
